These items consist mainly of correspondence, but various documents and newspaper and magazine clippings are included. The majority of the letters written by Payne are file copies in his handwriting. Many of these, in addition to the other items, have Payne's notes relevant to the contents. Many of the records dated subsequent to 1866 concern duels.
